BACK TO
BACK OF THE YARDS:
COLLAGE FROM SOUTHSIDE CHICAGO
A brand new series in 2011, BACK TO BACK
OF THE YARDS revisits the neighborhood where I grew up on the
south side of Chicago not far from the now-defunct Union Stockyards,
known to residents still as Back of the Yards. Putting to use
bona fide drawings from the 1950's and 60's, as well as notes,
school papers from grammar school, high school and college, not
to mention more recent accumulations, the series fast-forwards
to the present with the inclusion of contemporary imagery, contemplating
the continuum and deficiencies of memory, the transformation
of ephemera, and the foresight of one woman, my Mom, who salted
away boxes and boxes of all this stuff so that one day 50 years
later I could rediscover it all up in the attic and cart it off
to the studio.
