Jack Balas, 1993; REPORTS OF A SLIDE; acrylic and oil on folding canvas; 77" x 74"
You dive into the ragged edge of clouds over the pass it begins to hail. The pounding is deafening, but between it and the static from lightening and the wipers there seem to be reports of a slide -- somewhere. You graze a NO SHOULDER sign as you dig out the map, but the half you need is gone, torn away along the fold. At the bottom you see someone has written "It's a long way back to Columbus."
