2005 PAINTINGS |

In 2004, while having my first
solo show in New York at a Brooklyn gallery, I had the chance
to see an exhibition held concurrently at the Brooklyn Museum
called "Open House," a show featuring over 200 artists
currently working in the borough. While my work seemed to fit
in more or less with that of the other Williamsburg galleries
up and down the street, it was almost surreal to hop on the subway
and go in ten minutes from the BM over to My Show -- primarily
because of an overwhelming sense that I was on the opposite end
of an emotional spectrum from much of the work in the museum.
I didn't necessarily think that was bad, and I have been asking
myself since how I can go further in identifying those things
that are especially important to me and taking advantage of painting's
inherent strengths. These paintings were the beginning of my
response.
