PANORAMA PHOTOS (1982-1990)
all images © 2002 by Jack Balas

These panorama photos are comprised of continuous frames of 35mm film and printed as a single image, black spacer-bars included. I began such multi-frame images in 1979 making vertical portraits of friends with a 120 camera. Then in the 1980's, with a coast-to-coast truck-driving job as an art-shipper for five years, I started to concentrate on the broad horizons that filled my days. But the more I worked, the less concerned I became in keeping the image lined up exactly from frame to frame; rather, I started to bend the space in various ways and to repeat it in places, hoping to heighten the sense of fragmentation already provided by the black spacer bars. When I look at the sprocket holes in places, the emulsion notes and frame numbers printed to document the continuous nature of each piece, I realize not only that they were documenting the passage of time (between exposing the frame on the left and the one farthest to the right), but that they also were looking forward to my 2002 paintings that are similarly numbered in sequence and stamped with the dates of time's passing. |
