Jack Balas, 2004-2013; COVERED BRIDGE (A THOUSAND JULYS) (# 95 / 892); oil and enamel on canvas; 48" x 56"
text:
"Hot July noon, my bike on a dirt road, cross a small river,
chuck my clothes on the bank and wade in, feel roots and muck
ooze between my toes, the water only knee-deep. But the sun thrills
the rest of me, a Midwest Botticelli or Eakins or Grant Wood.
No one saw me, except for a farmer who was out in his corn, and
he stared a long time. I always wanted to be a farmer."
