Jack Balas, 2022; ACE WAS JOGGING (#2373); India ink and acrylic on paper, 30x22 inches
Ace was jogging past the lighthouse on Diamond Head when I flagged him down for a photo. Glossy with sweat, he was happy to stop, looking out to sea like the light. But I put the photo aside a few years, and when I came across it the other day I thought about that lighthouse -- over a hundred years of both warning and welcome to those out at sea. It called out to me with its beacon, this man pulling me in like a magnet on its sweep.
