BUDDIES and SPREADS
THIS YEAR in 2021 I've begun to make "Buddy" paintings, all currently on 30x22" paper, to accompany select figurative images of the same size as diptychs. But unlike the "usual" diptych approach where an entire piece is conceived as one, these pieces are painted individually, untethered to any specific piece, and only later matched up with earlier works (and some can very well stand on their own). While the match-ups or "Spreads" may be based on composition or content or even intuition, they can be somewhat interchangeable. Ultimately they all act like the two halves of magazine spreads, left page and right page-- at times talking to each other, at other times less so.
