THE DRAWING ROOM:
ALL-PURPOSE DRAWINGS, COLLAGE
and ETCHINGS

As the frequency of my work in drawing has increased, especially
with the TATTOO DETOUR series from Honolulu (not to mention from
other travel), I've found myself working on drawings in the studio
regularly, as well as within the scope of my "regular"
paintings. The collection on this page brings together a variety
of approaches, from new ink drawings and re-thought older ones,
to new collage and collage incorporating watercolors and drawings
of mine from the 1970's when I first started painting in high
school. These latter collage elements range from comic book and
boys' advencture book illustrations, to my own ink drawings,
the recontextualizations of which have been surprising and exciting,
especially considering their original traditional landscape impetus.
Going even further back, I've included a number of drawings,
all pencil on paper, done when I was somewhere between 5 and
8 years old, around the early 1960's. Some of these drawings
have been "re-drawn" using oil paint in the 2012-2013
paintings, while others appear as actual collage elements in
the BACK OF THE
YARD series. It's been extraordinary indeed to have so many
of my childhood and high school (and college) works at my fingertips
so many years later-- food not only for thought but for new works
that can look to the past and sense, perhaps, some arc, some
poetry, some life as we actually live it.
